Aeremonas hydrophila Infection

Abstract
Aeromonas hydrophila is found in natural water source and was infrequently reported as a cause of human infection._ But there is an increasing evidence that this organism does cause human infection, some of which with liver cirrhosis or malignancy are quite serious ones.
During 18 months, between July 1985 and Dec. 1986, Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from 17 differnent patients in Yeungnam University Hospital. We reviewed and analysed both clinical and laboratory data on 17 patients.
The results are as follow:
1. Most of the patient were over 40 year old, and showed predilection for male (1.8 : 1).
2. Most of the patients had the underlying disease such as hepatobiliary disease, various malignancy and trauma.
3. All of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin, most of them were resistant to cephalothin and carbenicillin but most of them were susceptible to gentamicin, tobra¡þmycin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol.
4. Two out of the 17 patients died. The cause of death was sepsis with liver cirrhosis. Since Aeromonas hydrophila infection may be fatal for compromised host and is not rare, the correct identification including stool culture are necessary.
